The competition – which emphasized improved connections and transitions between the 91-acre Arch grounds, downtown St. Louis, and the Mississippi riverfront – was launched last December and initially drew 49 teams, representing eight countries. Of those, nine teams were selected for the second round, with the five finalists announced in August 2010. The final jury pick – Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates of New York – was announced on Sept. 24, 2010. The project is scheduled for completion by Oct. 28, 2015, the 50th anniversary of the completion of the Arch.
